Green India Mission brings over 1.84 lakh hectares under eco-restoration since 2015-16: Govt

The Green India Mission has brought over 1.84 lakh hectares under eco-restoration across 17 states and one Union Territory since 2015-16, the government told Lok Sabha. It has allocated Rs 57.08 crore for approved restoration activities in seven states during FY2026-27

New Delhi: The Green India Mission (GIM) has brought more than 1.84 lakh hectares under eco-restoration in 17 states and one Union Territory since 2015-16, the government informed Lok Sabha on Monday.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh said that under the GIM, Rs 57.08 crore had been allocated so far during FY2026-27 to seven states — Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim, and Uttar Pradesh– for approved activities.

The GIM is one of the nine missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). Its aim is to restore degraded forest and non-forest landscapes through an integrated landscape approach.

“The implementation of plantation and maintenance activities under the GIM is undertaken through local institutions, including Joint Forest Management Committees, Village Forest Committees and other community-based organisations, as per the approved annual plan of operation,” said Singh.

He highlighted that the Environment Ministry is also implementing Nagar Van Yojana for the development of 600 Nagar Vans and 400 Nagar Vatikas between 2020-21 and 2026-27 to enhance urban green cover and ecological benefits. It is envisaged that the Nagar Vans will significantly contribute towards green cover and create ecological assets with the potential to improve air quality and micro-climate, according to Singh.
