Hyderabad: Idli is a traditional and healthy breakfast recipe famous across South India. The easy-to-make breakfast is made of black gram dal and rice or idli rava/ semolina. They are soaked, fermented, and battered. They are soft and fluffy and are served with chutney, sambar, rasam, pickles, and even gun powders.
We have many variants of idlis, like Tatte idli, Button idli, Sambar idli, Rava idli, and Masala idli. Apart from the normal variants, we have new and healthy variants of it like matar/ green peas idlis, spinach and carrot as well.
Matar or green peas idli is great to be served for light breakfast and is a good option for lunch box for kids. Green peas are quite rich in nutrients like fibre, protein, vitamins, and antioxidants.
Green peas can be added to any variant of recipes like curries, flavoured rice, roti, puri, dosa and idli as well. So let’s make all our meals healthy and flavourful with such recipes, and relish it with family and stay fit.
Ingredients
* Green peas : 1 cup
* Semolina ( upma rava) : 1 cup
* Green chillies : 2 to 3 nos
* Ginger : One small piece
* Coriander leaves : 1/4 cup
* Fenugreek leaves : 1/4 cup
* Curd : 1/2 cup
* Salt : As needed
* Soda : A pinch
* Oil : 1 tbsp
* Bengal gram dal : 1 tsp
* Black gram dal : 1 tsp
* Mustard seeds : 1/2 tsp
* Cumin seeds : 1/2 tsp
* Red chilli : 1 or 2
* Curry leaves : 2 reeds
Method
* Take a cup of green peas, a cup of semolina.
* Add the green peas to the mixie jar, add 2 to 3 green chillies, a small piece of ginger, 1/4 cup of coriander.
* Add 1/4 cup of fenugreek leaves, it’s optional. Add some water and grind it into a fine paste.
* Add a cup of semolina, 1/2 cup curd, and the ground paste, mix them all together well and let it set for 15 minutes with a lid on it.
* After 15 minutes, add salt as needed and a pinch of soda.
* Add water until we get idli batter consistency, and mix.
* Take idli moulds of any size we wish to, grease them with some oil/ ghee.
* Place the mould stand in the steamer with hot water in it.
* Cook them on high flame for 5 minutes, 5 minutes on medium flame, and 3 minutes on low flame with a lid on it.
* Take off all the idlis from the mould. They can be served with any chutney of our choice or can be tempered as well.
* Heat a pan with a tbsp of oil, add 1/2 tsp of Bengal gram and black gram dal each and sauté until change in colour.
* Add 1/2 tsp of mustard and Cumin Seeds, let splutter, add a piece of red chilli and 2 reeds of curry leaves.
* Add the idlis and stir and put off the flame.
* Tasty and healthy idlis are ready.
