Jeddah: The tragic episode of a grief-stricken NRI woman and her daughter stranded in Saudi Arabia finally ended after the intervention of the Indian embassy in the Gulf country.
Sharada and her daughter Shivani returned to Hyderabad on Sunday, after over a month of the death of her husband K Satyanarayana, who had come to his home town on a short vacation. He was a long time NRI, who was a native of Vijayawada but had settled down in Secunderabad. He was working in Dammam in Saudi Arabia for quite a long time and his family was well-off. But tragedy started sometime back when he lost his job.
Satyanarayana had to travel to Hyderabad on an emergency and was planning to return within a week. He was stranded in Hyderabad following suspension of international flights and his wife and daughter were stuck in Saudi Arabia. The family was hoping for his return but sadly he contracted novel coronavirus and died September 8.
Adding to the family’s woes, the wife was not aware of anything about the sponsor of her husband, who could have facilitated their exit visa in the absence of her husband. At the eleventh hour, they found that their passports had expired.
Sharada was not informed about her husband’s death but only told that he was ailing, and that they need to return to India. The family was living alone, and had no relatives or friends to support them in the worst crisis of life. The mother also fell sick and only the younger daughter could call her brother in Hyderabad for help, even though she was not in a position to even recharge her mobile phone.
The brother, who is a first year engineering student, contacted the embassy in Riyadh from Hyderabad and sought their help to repatriate his sister and mother.
Ambassador Dr. Ausaf Sayed and senior diplomat D.B. Bhati extended every possible help to the family starting from school Transfer Certificate to travel tickets.
Touched by the plight of the family, Nass Shoukat, a prominent social worker completed the required legal procedures for the family to travel with the help of Indian embassy and Saudi passport officials.
