Jagtial: A Gulf returnee staged a protest against the felling of a tree in Jagtial town on Monday that had the municipal authorities rush to the spot and impose a fine of Rs 5,000 on the person who chopped down the tree.

Edavalapalli Prabhakar and his four brothers own a joint property near LG Ram Lodge in the town. Prabhakar had planted a tree on his share of land a few years ago. Without his knowledge, Prabhakar’s brothers Rajesham and Srinivas constructed two rooms while the former was in Dubai. The brothers have been locked in dispute over distribution of property.

To take revenge on their brother, Rajesham and Srinivas chopped the tree planted by Prabhakar two days ago. Enraged by the incident, Prabhakar staged the protest at the place where the tree was chopped. Prabhakar said his brothers were harassing him over property dispute and chopped down the tree because of the grudge they held against him.

Stating that the State government had taken up Haritha Haram to increase green cover in the State, Prabhakar said his brothers cut down a tree and violated government rules, and sought action against them.

On learning about the incident, Municipal authorities imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Rajesham and ordered him to plant a new tree in place of the old one.
