Hyderabad: A businessman, who got friendly with a woman he met on Facebook, lost about Rs.1.2 crore in what the police say was a classic honey trap. Three persons including a woman have been arrested in connection with the case.
According to the Amberpet police, the three were arrested on charges of cheating a Guntur-based businessman after befriending him through Facebook. Police said the victim, Subba Reddy of Guntur, came in contact with a woman identified as Archana (24), a beautician from DD colony in Amberpet a few months ago through Facebook.
“The woman had used the picture of another woman as her profile picture and got in touch with Subba Reddy. After chatting over Facebook and later via WhatsApp, she convinced him that she needed around Rs.1 lakh for renovating her beauty parlour,” Amberpet Sub-inspector Mallesh said, adding that over a period of time, she, along with a relative Sai Kumar and friend Anil Kumar, extorted around Rs.1.2 crore from the businessman on some pretext or the other.
“Using the money, she along with her friend also went to Goa and other tourist places. She also gave a part of the money to Sai Kumar,” the SI said, adding that the victim came to the city last week and approached Archana. On realizing he was duped, he approached the Amberpet police, who booked a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code against Archana, Sai Kumar and Anil Kumar and arrested them.
They were produced before court and remanded in judicial custody.
