Kothagudem: Telangana Tourism’s Haritha Hotel built at Yellandu crossroads in the district headquarters has been lying defunct for several months even after completion of construction.
The NITI Aayog (State Plans Division) had sanctioned a budget of Rs.12.36 crore, with a Central share of over Rs.3.70 crore and a State share of over Rs.8.65 crore, to promote tourism in the district. The Centre released its share under the one-time Additional Central Assistance (ACA) for the Annual Plan 2014-15.
Construction of the Haritha Hotel and Haritha Convention on eight acres of land began in 2016 but faced considerable delay. The works were eventually completed by December 2025, with the Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation (TGTDC) overseeing the project.
The facility, located on the Kothagudem–Bhadrachalam main road, has 46 rooms, a restaurant with a seating capacity of 40 persons, a banquet hall that can accommodate 800 persons, eight suites, a dormitory with 29 beds and other amenities. However, the hotel has not yet been opened for public use, much to the disappointment of tourists and devotees visiting the district during Sri Rama Navami, Mukkoti Ekadasi celebrations at the Bhadradri temple and during the summer holidays.
A tender notification issued in November 2025 by the Tourism department to lease out the facility to private parties for operation under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode failed to attract bidders. Another tender was called a couple of months later but it too failed to elicit any response, for reasons that remain unclear.
A similar situation prevails with another Haritha Hotel built with around 36 rooms at the Kinnerasani reservoir site near Paloncha to promote eco-tourism.
Devotees have urged the government, local MLA and MP to look into the issues preventing eligible bidders from coming forward to operate the facilities and resolve them so that the hotels can be opened for the benefit of devotees and tourists visiting the district.
Tourism Corporation District Executive Ramakrishna said steps were being taken to call for tenders again to hand over the responsibility of operating the Haritha Hotels at Kothagudem and Kinnerasani to eligible firms.
