Hyderabad: Multiple districts in Telangana are set to battle a combination of intense dry heat and recurring thunderstorms over the next week, with maximum temperatures hovering between 41 degree Celsius and 44 degree Celsius until Friday, May 1.

While more than 20 districts face a 2 to 3 degree rise in mercury during the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad on Sunday issued a warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) across various districts effective till Friday, May 1, 2026.

The IMD forecast suggests thundershowers are likely to strike during the latter half of the day or night, offering some relief from the dry heat. The weather pattern, which includes extreme daytime heating followed by sporadic evening severe thunderstorms, is expected to persist until May 1.

Between April 26 and April 28, isolated thunderstorms are likely in Adilabad, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Kamareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and Rangareddy, along with Nalgonda, Warangal, and Hanumakonda.
On Wednesday, April 29, the thunderstorm intensity is expected to peak, with the IMD, Hyderabad warning of activity across all districts of Telangana.

Between April 30 and May 1, a similar weather pattern of high daytime temperatures followed by thunderstorms will remain active specifically in districts such as Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Mahabubnagar, and the surrounding Nagarkurnool and Jogulamba Gadwal regions.

According to the IMD, the ongoing thunderstorms are driven by a low-level trough running from northern interior parts of Karnataka to Kanyakumari. With many parts of the state hitting 40 degree Celsius to 44 degree Celsius, this extreme surface heat meets moisture from the trough, triggering the formation of cumulonimbus (rain-bearing) clouds.
