The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) released the schedule for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) Main 2024 interview, which will be conducted from January 7 to April 17. The interviews will be conducted for 2,845 candidates in two sessions — morning session (reporting time: 9 am) and afternoon session (reporting time: 1 pm).

Key aspects assessed during interview
Communication skills: Confidence and clarity in articulating thoughts

Emotional intelligence: Ability to manage emotions and empathise with others
Decision-making skills: Critical thinking and problem-solving ability
Leadership qualities: Inspiring and motivating others effectively
Adaptability: Flexibility in handling diverse challenges
Energy levels: Mental and physical resilience under stress
Motivation: Dedication and passion for public service
Knowledge: Awareness of current events and practical application of knowledge
Overall fit: Professionalism and teamwork capability
General guidelines for dress code
For men: Formal suit in navy blue, black, or gray. Light-coloured shirt, simple tie, and polished black leather shoes; minimal accessories.
For women: Formal saree, salwar kameez, or dress in conservative colours; low-heeled shoes, simple jewellry, and neatly tied-back hair
Composition of interview board
The interview board comprises five members — a president, chairperson of the commission, a retired Government of India secretary, a retired State Chief Secretary, an academician (senior professor), and a scientist from a reputed institution such as AIIMS, ISRO or NGRI.
What is expected by the board
The board expects candidates to exhibit the following characters in answers of the candidate
Intellectual and moral integrity: Candidates should demonstrate that they do what is right in all situations, and that they stay true to their rational thinking
Communication skills: Candidates should avoid using excessive jargon or technical terms that could confuse the panel
Leadership: Candidates should demonstrate their ability to lead a team towards a goal
Crisis management abilities: Candidates should demonstrate they have the administrative skills and suitability for civil services roles
Critical thinking: Candidates should be able to think critically, analyse different perspectives, and present well-supported arguments
Norms while entering the interview room
• Wait to be called with your name, knock gently, and enter confidently with a smile
• Greet the board members respectfully, addressing any woman members first
• Wait for permission from the chairperson or the board members before sitting down
• Sit confidently and comfortably in the chair, with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor
• Adjust your chair to a comfortable height and position, if necessary
• Place your hands on your lap or on the armrests, avoiding fidgeting or crossing your arms
• Maintain eye contact with the board members, especially when they are speaking to you
Tips for successful interview
Answering techniques: Listen carefully, pause briefly to organise thoughts, and maintain eye contact. Be honest, confident, and respectful. Provide relevant answers with a positive tone
Common mistakes to avoid:
Avoid excessive apologising or overconfidence; don’t provide irrelevant information
Final tips for interview
Thorough preparation and regular practice are essential to build confidence and sharpen your answering skills. Authenticity is crucial and be true to yourself, keep a relaxed and composed demeanor. Take deep breaths if you feel nervous, and remember that the interview is a conversation, not an interrogation.
