Hyderabad: “I have a story at hand already which was written long ago, so I was looking for a suitable actor who is a novice, yet portrays emotions with perfect timing. ‘Hero’ is a story of my protagonist who is passionate about cinema. He wants to become an actor. It’s a proper celebration of cinema, I should say. ‘Hero’ is a romantic potboiler with a hidden twist towards the end,” says the director Sriram Aditya.
Starring Ashok Galla and Niddhi Agerwal in the lead, ‘Hero’ will test the waters at the box office amidst the Omicron scare this Sankranti.
After the success with Ram Pothineni’s ‘Devadas’ in 2006, he went on to direct ‘Bhale Manchi Roju’ and ‘Shamanthakamani’, which have received mixed response at the box office. “I always tried experimenting with non-formulaic films. It’s a massive responsibility to launch a hero like Ashok Galla who comes from the background of superstars and politicians.
Before narrating the script of ‘Hero’, I put before him the references of stars like Megastar Chiranjeevi, Superstar Krishna and Mahesh to make him observe. Chiranjeevi garu has an extraordinary timing in pulling off comedy sequences. We have stars enough here in Telugu, to learn and unlearn. So, I wanted Ashok Galla to pick the body language from the references so that it will be helpful for him in the craft,” he says.
Speaking about the debut actor Ashok Galla, the director says, “Although he studied in the USA, he knows how to read and write his native language. I was surprised to see him reading the script in Telugu on the sets on the first day. I didn’t find him to be a first-timer after working with him for several weeks.”
Compared to ‘Bhale Manchi Roju’ and ‘Shamanthakamani’, Ram Pothineni’s ‘Devadas’ has a commercial template. “But I would stick to my usual style of narrating stories when given a free hand.
That’s where I love to direct scripts that come out of my heart. We have been seeing several films on OTT during the pandemic. I can say audiences would watch ‘Hero’ because I can promise that it will not be a regular commercial potboiler but has an engaging story,” concludes Aditya.
