Hyderabad: With the sighting of the new crescent indicating the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan on Saturday evening, hectic activity is witnessed in the city.

Ramzan or Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar also known as lunar calendar. In the month Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Quran, and observe fast during the sunlit hours. It is believed that fasting draws one closer to the almighty and cultivates self-control, gratitude, and empathy for those less fortunate.

“Ramadan is a time to train oneself both physically and spiritually by avoiding any negative acts such as gossiping, backbiting, lying, or arguing. It is a means to grow in moral excellence. Muslims spend more time in prayers during the month,” said Moulana Dr Ahsan Bin Mohammed Al Hamoomi, Khateeb of Royal Mosque (Shahi Masjid) Public Garden.

On Saturday night, the “taraweeh” prayers were held at mosques in the city and a huge gathering was witnessed at the Mecca Masjid, Shahi Masjid (Royal Mosque Public Garden), Chiran Palace Mosque, Jam e Masjid – Aiwan-E-Begumpet (Spanish mosque), Masjid Vazir Ali, Jam e Masjid Secunderabad, Jam e Masjid Musherabad, and other mosques.

Arrangements for ‘taraweeh’ prayers for women were made at apartment buildings, madarasas, function halls and other spacious buildings. Taraweeh is a special prayer that Muslims perform throughout Ramzan. It is a congregational prayer that involves reading long parts of the Quran and usually led by a Hafiz (a person who memorised the whole Quran).

After confirmation of the new moon sighting, people flocked the markets to purchase groceries, vegetables and meat to prepare ‘sehri’ or ‘suhoor’ meal for Sunday. The first roza (fast) will be observed on Sunday.

Health experts advised the community to take a proper diet during Ramzan. A city based medical professional, Dr Khiazar Raoof explained during fasting, especially when no food or drink is consumed from dawn until dusk the body continues to lose water and electrolytes throughout the day through natural processes.

“It leads to dehydration if not properly managed. People should include foods rich in electrolytes like bananas, avocados, and yogurt during pre-dawn meal and after breaking fats use electrolyte-rich drinks, vegetables and fruits. Also, one should drink sufficient water during non-fasting hours to stay hydrated,” he advised.
