Honoured by KTR, Shivamma glows with pride
On Tuesday, the Minister remembered the efforts of construction workers who are helping Hyderabad become a global city and called Shivamma on to the stage to inaugurate the new flyover at Balanagar
Hyderabad: July 6 will forever remain etched in the memory of K Shivamma, a construction worker hailing from Manigilla village in Wanaparthy. For that was the day she felt proud of herself and also of hundreds of workers like her, whose sweat and hard work usually go unnoticed and unacknowledged.
In fact, on Tuesday, when IT Minister KT Rama Rao remembered the efforts of construction workers who are helping Hyderabad become a global city and called Shivamma on to the stage to inaugurate the new flyover at Balanagar, there were several others like her who felt proud of themselves.
Sharing her experience with ‘Telangana Today’, Shivamma says she was nervous when the Minister called her on to the stage. “We were all very happy when the Minister was talking about efforts of construction workers, citing the example of the Taj Mahal. Suddenly when I was called on to the stage, I became nervous,” she says.
“I didn’t know how to react, but the immense respect shown towards me and my work by the people on the dais helped. I was very happy cutting the ribbon,” she smiles. Shivamma, who has been part of multiple construction projects, says it is the first time efforts of construction workers are being appreciated.
“Once the building or flyover or road is ready, we are forgotten. And we go in search of the next job. But this inauguration came as a surprise. For the first time, our efforts were acknowledged and we were showered with respect,” she says, with her colleagues M Nagula and S Alvela too echoing her.
The mother of two is now a ‘star’, with family and friends all calling her and appreciating her. “My younger daughter, who is in school in Wanaparthy, called me and said she was so happy seeing me on television and in newspapers,” she laughs.
On Wednesday too, the calls haven’t stopped. People from her village are now all praise for Shivamma, who stays along with three other women in a small accommodation arranged by the construction firm, BSCPL, in Balanagar. Though the firm is taking care of her needs, she says she does not have a house of her own.
