Hyderabad: The surgeons at Care Hospitals, Malakpet have given a new lease of life to a 65-year-old-patient, who endured pain following a knee replacement surgery for over a decade due to a rare antibiotic-resistant infection.
After suffering the pain for over a decade, the patient ended-up at Care Hospitals where the team, led by Dr. Repakula Kartheek identified an antibiotic-resistant infection around his knee replacement.
The medical team immediately performed a two-stage revision surgery, starting with the removal of the infected implant and inserting antibiotic spacers to manage the infection.
After weeks of targeted antibiotics and careful monitoring, the second stage of the surgery i.e. replacing the damaged femur with a custom implant designed to ensure both stability and infection control, was performed.
“Treating antibiotic-resistant infections is incredibly complex and our goal was not only to control the infection but also to restore his mobility and improve his quality of life. Within weeks, the patient was walking with support and is now on the road to full recovery,” Dr Kartheek said.
