Hyderabad: Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) Hospitals, Hitec City on Friday launched Barry Marshall Centre for H Pylori Research, billed as the first centre focused on the study and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections.
Named after Nobel laureate Barry Marshall, who earned the prize for medicine in 2005 for discovering the role of H pylori in causing peptic ulcers, the research facility will be invovled in developing a healthcare model that not only treats but prevents H. Pylori infections and eradication.
“India’s H. Pylori strains show distinct genetic characteristics, requiring customized research into infection patterns and treatment responses,” Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman and Chief of Gastroenterology, AIG Hospitals, said.
The centre, which was inaugurated by Prof, Barry Marshall himself, aims to educate the public, encourage early testing, and promote treatment adherence, with the goal of significantly reducing H. Pylori prevalence and the incidence of stomach cancer in India.
The Chairman of AIG Hospitals said that the prevalence of H pylori infections in India among general population is 50 to 60 per cent, which is almost ten times more than the incidence of diabetes in our country and was the leading cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and notably stomach cancer.
Prof. Marshalll will also deliver the Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy Endowment Oration on his journey of discovering H Pylori on Saturday at the 8th Annual Conference of the IMA Telangana Chapter) at the AIG Hospitals, hosted by IMA Hyderabad North and IMA-AIG Chapters.
