Hyderabad: Surgeons at Apollo Hospitals on Wednesday said they have conducted a day care minimally invasive left total hip replacement surgery on a 22-year-old patient from Somalia who was discharged within seven hours after the surgery. The surgery on the patient Liban was led by orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Paripati Sharat Kumar.
“The patient was admitted with severe pain in the left hip and investigations revealed severe arthritis due to Ankylosing Spondylitis, which made doctors take-up left total hip replacement. The patient was able to sit, stand and walk within six hours post-surgery,” doctors said.
Except for Ankylosing Spondylitis, the patient was young and healthy, making him an ideal candidate for minimally invasive day care surgery. “A minimally invasive uncemented total hip replacement surgery using jumbo cup with 36mm ceramic head implants was done through a minute incision of about four to five inches. He has since recovered and is undergoing physiotherapy,” surgeons said.
Minimally invasive surgeries come with several benefits like being back home same day, faster recovery, less infection, economic advantage, minimal disturbance to regular routine to the patient and family, surgeons said.
