Hyderabad: A 31-year-old woman doctor from the city was cheated, blackmailed, and extorted by a cyber-fraudster to the tune of Rs 10 lakh on a popular matrimony site.
The fraudster who introduced himself as Harsha expressed interest in marrying the complainant, on the matrimony site. She too accepted the proposal and the two continued their communication through mobile phone.
The suspect during the conversations had allegedly fabricated a story about his family’s financial constraints and requested financial assistance. “The woman who believed his story fell into his trap and ended up transferring lakhs of rupees into the bank account provided by him,” a cybercrime official said.
Recently, when she asked him about their wedding plans, Harsha started abusing her and threatened to ruin her reputation by posting her morphed photos on social media. He also demanded an additional Rs 10 lakh for not publicising them. Unable to take further harassment, the doctor approached the Hyderabad Cybercrime police who booked a case and took up an investigation.
