Hyderabad: The inaugural Dr PV Chalapathi Rao Memorial Oration instituted by the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) was delivered by renowned surgeon from Mumbai, Dr VN Shrikhande during the 81st annual conference of The Association of Surgeons of India (ASICON 2021).
Over 7,000 surgeons and surgical trainees from all over India and abroad participated in the scientific congress being conducted over three days between December 17 and 19. The Oration was instituted in memory of Dr Chalapathi Rao, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 92, by Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), representing surgical fraternity in the country.
Dr Rao was a noted surgeon and the very first surgeon from TS and AP to have served as the president of ASI in 1994. He served the government of undivided Andhra Pradesh for 20 years and took voluntary retirement in 1983.
Dr Rao is known to popularise ‘Highly Selective Vagotomy (HSV)’, an operation that was performed for peptic ulcer in late 1970s and 1980s. His son Dr P Raghu Ram is a noted cancer specialist and served as president of ASI in 2020.
