Hyderabad: The fingerprints of a suspect, who was arrested in a mobile phone theft case by S R Nagar police, helped investigators crack two more cases that had gone cold due to lack of evidence.

The S R Nagar police had recently arrested one Govind Bandari (24), who works at a fast food centre in Kukatpally and is a native of Nepal, in connection with a theft case and recovered 51 mobile phones from him.

According to investigators, in 2019, Bandari made it to India from Nepal illegally and since then had been working at different places.

As per mandated protocols, the S R Nagar police collected his fingerprints and sent them to the Fingerprint Bureau unit of Hyderabad Police. It turns out that the prints were a match for two more cases, a robbery at a house and a burglary at a bank in Ramachandrapuram in 2019.

“Based on a fingerprint match, Jubilee Hills police apprehended Bandari and on interrogation, he admitted to his involvement in the 2019 robbery cases. He used a knife to rob a woman of cash, a gold chain, a diamond ring and a watch,” Jubilee Hills Inspector R Madhusudhan said.

Back in 2019, the police, as part of their investigations at Jubilee Hills and Ramachandrapuram collected fingerprints from the scene of offence and shared them with the fingerprint bureau for matching. However, since Bandari was not arrested for any offence earlier his fingerprints were not there in the police records.

The police stored the fingerprints in their database to check with new suspects who get arrested in criminal cases. When the S R Nagar police arrested Bandari and sent his fingerprint impressions to the bureau, a match was found. Bandari was involved in 15 cases reported in the city in the last year. The police were on the lookout for his accomplice Rajesh Chethri, who was absconding.
