Hyderabad: The Human Rights Forum (HRF) Hyderabad committee on Monday demanded the Telangana Congress government to immediately release all University of Hyderabad (UoH) students who were detained during protest against clearing the forested area in Kancha Gachibowli here on Sunday.

In a statement here, HRF Hyderabad president M Suresh condemned the heavy-handed response by the police, including the arrest of protesting students.

Several students were forcefully taken to various police stations, while students Naveen and Rohit from different student associations were booked under serious charges in Gachibowli police station, he said, adding “This kind of repression against peaceful protesters is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately”.

Condemning the decision to auction 400 acres in Kancha Gachibowli, Suresh demanded immediate cancellation of the auction. He wanted the government to allocate the 400 acres of land exclusively to the UoH.

HRF Hyderabad general secretary Sanjeev wanted a comprehensive survey of the entire university land be done and land must be officially registered under the varsity’s name. He also sought assessment of the biodiversity to protect the region’s ecological balance and historical significance.
