Hyderabad: Despite a ban on online betting apps in the State since 2017, these platforms continue to flourish and operate leading to financial losses and in several instances, suicides of their victims particularly the young ones.

Interestingly, most of these apps are allegedly being managed by their organizers based abroad, complicating enforcement efforts. Investigations have revealed that while these betting apps are accessible locally, their operations are often controlled by individuals residing overseas.

Recently, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) officials have found that some betting apps are being operated by Indian nationals based in Dubai, with the actual gaming activities hosted in countries like the Philippines, where betting is legal.

“These apps are gaining rapid momentum due to unmindful promotions of local social media influencers, thereby attracting a broader audience, mostly youngsters,” said D Kavitha, DCP Cybercrime.

The Cyberabad Police recently registered a case against YouTuber Harsha Sai after a follower reported losing several lakhs influenced by his content. Similarly, other influencers, including Vishnu Priya, Ritu Choudhary, Tasty Teja, and Kiran Goud, have been questioned for their alleged involvement in promoting such platforms.

The Hyderabad police have intensified their investigations, issuing notices to several influencers and booking cases under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. However, the international nature of these operations poses significant challenges with people organizing betting apps or promoting them taking shelter in other countries.

Despite efforts being put by law enforcement agencies, the operation of these betting apps in Hyderabad and across India, often managed by organizers from abroad is proving to be a task in curbing them. Coordinated efforts between local authorities and international agencies are needed to address the issue.

TGCSB implements geo-fencing technology

The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB), as part of combating these illegal betting apps, has implemented geo-fencing technology, successfully blocking 133 apps operated by Indian companies since January 2025.

“Strong measures are in place to curb betting apps. The TGCSB has booked 385 cases until now with strict action against them,” said a senior official from TGCSB.

To help curb this menace, report any betting platforms on 8712672222 via WhatsApp.

Apps ruining lives, says Sajjanar

Senior IPS officer and TGSRTC Managing Director VC Sajjanar raised concerns about the harmful impact of online betting apps, stating they were ruining many lives.

“Social media influencers are requested to refrain from promoting these platforms for personal gain. Innocent people are falling victim to the online betting epidemic due to videos shared by influencers claiming that users can become millionaires overnight. These individuals are destroying their bright futures,” he said.

Sajjanar requested the youth not be deceived by influencers promoting easy money through betting apps.

“There is nothing wrong with having aspirations, but greed can only ruin our lives. Do not fall for false claims as they are clear signs of cheating and fraud,” he said.
