Hyderabad man charged after CCTV catches him deliberately crushing puppy
Hyderabad police have registered an FIR against a man for allegedly running over a puppy in Saroornagar. The case was booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita with support from PETA India after CCTV footage captured the act of animal cruelty.
Hyderabad: In a disturbing incident of animal cruelty, the Hyderabad City Police with the help of PETA India and a local caregiver, have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a man for allegedly running over a puppy with his car in Saroornagar.
The incident took place on January 2, when a vehicle was caught on CCTV slowly approaching a group of five puppies before crushing one under its wheels. The driver did not stop or offer assistance, leaving the animal dead. When confronted by the local caregiver Sonali Bhowmick, the accused, identified as Shravan, was reportedly recorded stating, “I don’t want any dog over here.”
The Saroornagar Police Station registered the FIR under Section 325 of (BNS), 2023. This section classifies the killing or maiming of an animal as a cognizable offense, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to five years, a fine, or both.
Commending Hyderabad police for quick action, Sinchana Subramanyan, PETA India’s Senior Cruelty Response Coordinator said “Those who abuse animals often move on to harming humans”.
PETA India is also advocating psychiatric evaluations for animal abusers, citing research that links animal cruelty to violent crimes against humans. The organization has urged the public to report abuse immediately and provides a 24/7 emergency helpline (9820122602) for injured animals.
