Hyderabad: A team of doctors from Apollo Cradle and Children’s Hospital, Kondapur led by senior Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr Prameela Shekhar have saved lives of a mother, who had developed a life-threatening complication, and her newborn by performing an emergency caesarean surgery.
The 32-year-old woman was into her eighth month of pregnancy when doctors detected that she had developed a life-threatening complication known as umbilical cord prolapse, which could be fatal for both the mother and the foetus.
Due to her medical condition, doctors conducted immediate C-section and safely delivered a baby girl weighing 2.45 kg. Both the mother and baby are healthy with no other complications, Dr Prameela Shekhar said.
The umbilical cord prolapse is a medical emergency during pregnancy that necessitates urgent C-section. The umbilical cord is the lifeline of the foetus and a prolapse could lead to it getting squeezed between the baby and the mother’s womb, thereby depriving the foetus of its supply of essentials including oxygen needed to survive, Dr Prameela added.
