Hyderabad: A 21-km cycling track proposed by the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) on the Outer Ring Road is likely to double up as an environmental conservation measure, protecting cyclists from the sun and traffic and also enabling the government to produce clean energy.
This will be on the lines of a similar facility in South Korea, a video of which was tweeted by Norwegian environmentalist and president, Green Belt and Road Institute, Erik Solheim after which Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao suggested that the idea be replicated on the ORR in Hyderabad too.
Solheim had tweeted a video of the South Korean facility, which has solar panels in the middle of a highway with a bicycle path underneath. This, he said, would ensure that the cyclists are protected from the sun, isolated from traffic, with the icing on the cake being that the country could produce clean energy as well.
Following this, Rama Rao tagged Urban Development Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar in his tweet and asked him to replicate it on the ORR.
The Minister’s suggestion has been appreciated by several people, including Santhana Selvan, the Bicycle Mayor of Hyderabad.
This was not all. The same tweet’s reactions saw the Minister pointing out that Hyderabad was already the best city in India. This was in response to a tweet from Venky Sai saying the way KTR was handling things might make Hyderabad the best city in India. “You are truly a role model for other states,” he said.
To this, the Minister said we were already the best city in India.
“Check out Mercer rankings on livability index for Indian cities from 2015-20. 5 years in a row, Hyderabad has been rated as the best among Indian cities,” he pointed out.
