Hyderabad: A 63-year-old resident from Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Rasiklal Shanthilal Kothari, who needed a second bypass heart surgery, has successfully undergone a Bilateral Internal Mammary Artery (BIMA) bypass surgery on the beating heart at Care Hospitals, Banjara Hills, a press release said.
The patient had undergone first bypass surgery six years ago and after a few years started experiencing health complications. Diagnostic tests revealed that he had developed 90 per cent left main coronary artery disease and 100 per cent right coronary artery disease.
Dr. Prateek Bhatnagar, Director, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Care Hospitals, and his team took-up three grafts using BIMA for the redo bypass surgery. The surgery was done on the beating heart while the heart kept pumping blood with no heart-lung machine.
“The BIMA technique has proven to be working in 90 per cent of patients even after 20 years. It has proven to be more effective with long-term results and is also cosmetically better with less pain,” Dr Bhatnagar said.
Following the surgery, Shantilal Kothari has recovered and was discharged on Wednesday, Dr. Rahul Medakkar, COO, Care Hospitals said.
