Hyderabad: Tension prevailed on the University of Hyderabad campus after bulldozers were allegedly brought in to clear the forested area of Kancha Gachibowli on Sunday afternoon.
The heavy machinery reportedly came at the UoH east campus to clear the 400 acres of forested land, which the Telangana Congress government has put up for auction.
Students who gathered in large numbers raised slogans against the police personnel who barricaded the entire east campus. They climbed onto the bulldozers and tried to stop the heavy machinery in protest.
The police personnel detained several students, including Students union general secretary Nihad Sulaiman. Some students who were going to east campus for studying were also reportedly detained.
In a video, a UoH student said students reached the east campus upon receiving information that police were barricading the area and JCBs were brought in. “We just wanted to know what was happening there but the police forcibly took six students, including girls,” the student said.
A girl student who was among the detained, said students reached east campus to ascertain why bulldozers were on the campus. “We just questioned the official there. In fact, I was returning when the police forcibly detained me,” she added.
