Hyderabad: The Laryngectomee Society, a self-help rehabilitation group for throat cancer survivors, celebrated its 25th anniversary by holding a get-together at Apollo Medical College, Hyderabad on Sunday.
The event brought together laryngectomees, cancer conquerors who underwent life-altering surgery involving removal of larynx i.e. voice box, and their families, and celebrated the resilience, camaraderie of patients and enabled them to share their stories of determination and recovery.
Dr. Umanath Nayak, senior Head and Neck surgeon, Apollo Hospitals and founder of the Laryngectomee, said, “When we started this initiative 25 years ago, our aim was to create a platform where patients could find strength in community, regain their confidence, and rediscover their voices. Today, seeing how far we’ve come is immensely gratifying.”
Tributes were paid to the efforts of multidisciplinary rehabilitation team including speech therapists, counselors, oncologists, and volunteers who supported the patients. “This achievement belongs to every patient who had the courage to start afresh and family members who offered unwavering support, and every member of our team who worked relentlessly to restore lives,” Dr. Nayak added.
