Hyderabad: Bountiful rain this monsoon has given a significant boost to the city’s groundwater table, with data showing a 2 metre to 3 metre rise this season.
According to data from the Ground Water Department, several areas across the city have shown marked improvement in groundwater table, compared to previous years. “The recent rainfall has replenished aquifers, ensuring that there will be no groundwater shortage the next monsoon,” said a senior GWD official.
Until June end, most areas in the city have experienced a deficit in the groundwater resulting in the demand for tankers reaching a significant level.
“Hyderabad district’s normal rainfall for June is 96.3 mm, but the recorded rainfall was only 28.4 mm. Thus, the rainfall deviation is 71 per cent. As a result, the groundwater table in Bandlaguda, Asifnagar, Bahadurpura, Charminar, Himayatnagar, Golconda, Amberpet, Ameerpet, Khairatabad, Musheerabad, Marredpally, Secunderabad, and Tirumalagiri dipped drastically,” a senior official told ‘Telangana Today’.
In July, the monsoon turned brisk with heavy rains across Hyderabad. Thus, there was only a 6 per cent deviation between normal rainfall, which was 269.3 mm, and 251.8 mm, as seen in the cumulative rainfall between July 1 and July 28, he said.
In almost all areas, the groundwater table observed a rise between 1 and 2 metres below the ground level (mgbl). “The groundwater table in Marredpally, Bandlaguda, Charminar, Himayatnagar, Ameerpet, Khairatabad, and Secunderabad improved and also rose, ” the GWD official explained.
In August and September, rainfall was heavy. Almost all the water bodies were at the brim, and a significant rise was seen in the groundwater table, increasing between 2 to 4 metres and above.
Tanker demand drops:
Meanwhile, the HMWSSB officials confirmed that abundant rainfall in July, August and September helped in bringing down the dependence on water tankers and their demand has started to drop.
Usually, tanker bookings every month (except during the summer season) are around 4,000 to 6,000. However, these bookings dipped to 2,500 to 3,000 due to heavy rains and an increase in the groundwater table.
City-based environmentalists attribute the bountiful rains experienced by the city to a significant boost in its groundwater levels. The widespread rainfall helped recharge aquifers and alleviate water scarcity concerns for the coming months, they concede but advocate long term sustainable solutions to be able to conserve the groundwater.
