Hyderabad: Transplant surgeons at Care Hospitals, Banjara Hills have saved the life of a three-year-old child, who was suffering from end-stage liver disease known as Caroli’s syndrome, by conducting a paediatric blood group incompatible liver transplant surgery.
Due to the failing liver, the child was malnourished and weighed just eight kilograms. Apart from that, the child, whose family hailed from Kolkata, was also suffering from deep jaundice, recurrent fever, water retention and frequent black stools.
The doctors advised for liver transplant but due lack of blood group compatible liver donor, poor general condition and financial constraints, the child’s family was unable to take-up the surgery.
“Caroli’s syndrome is a rare genetic condition that affects about one child in a million. In this condition, the bile ducts in the liver are hugely dilated, causing stones to form in the bile duct and liver,” said Dr Mohammed AbdunNayeem`, Clinical Director and Head of Care Institute of Digestive Diseases and Liver Transplant, Care Hospitals.
Transplant surgeons conducted the incompatible liver transplant with child’s father donating a portion of the liver. As the family of the child were unable to afford the surgery cost, the hospital arranged the full finances. The child was discharged 10 days after the successful surgery.
