Hyderabad: Between November this year and March next year, Hyderabad will host the FIA Formula E, the fastest growing motor sport series and the first global sport to be certified with a net zero carbon footprint from inception.
The Telangana Government on Monday signed a letter of intent with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Formula E, an association that represents the interests of motoring organisations and motor car users and also the governing body for auto racing events such as the well-known Formula One, to make Hyderabad a Host City.
With Formula E coming to Hyderabad, the city joins the league of Beijing, Putrajaya, Puntal Del Este, Buenos Aires, Miami, Long Beach, Berlin, Moscow, Paris, Hong Kong and other cities that have hosted the race since its inception in 2014-15.
This will be the first time that the global sporting event is coming to India. Unlike for the Formula One race, Formula E does not require any tracks to be laid and the race happens on the existing (street) roads. The street car race, exclusive to electric vehicles, will happen near Tank Bund on a 2.3 7 km long road with eight turns. Currently, Formula E boasts of a cumulative viewership of 500 million.
“Fastest growing motor sport series on the planet @FIAFormulaE comes to #HappeningHyderbad.I strongly believe that this will usher in an electric growth in EVs, new decarbonised sustainable future and make #Telangana an ideal EV hub,” Industries and IT Minister KT Rama Rao tweeted, after participating in the signing ceremony.
Industry honcho Anand Mahindra, who nurtures a Formula E team tweeted: “We are one of the founding teams in Formula E and a long held dream of @MahindraRacing has been to race our cars on home ground, cheered on by a home crowd. Thank you@KTRTRS for taking a huge step towards making that dream a reality! We can’t wait..”
