Hyderabad: The Sanathnagar police have arrested a woman for allegedly snatching a gold chain from an elderly resident.
Police said Anita Reddy, a native of Warangal and holds a BTech degree had previously worked as a software employee in Chennai but later quit her job.
Two years ago, she married Rajesh, a resident of Medchal, and the couple has a one-year-old daughter. Rajesh, who earlier worked with a finance company, reportedly stopped working and accumulated debts of around Rs 4 to Rs 5 lakh.
According to the police, financial pressure at home and the burden of loans allegedly drove Anita to plan the theft as a way to earn quick money. On Monday evening, she snatched chain from an elderly woman at Avanthi Nagar Thota Colony, when the latter was entering a lift in her apartment building.
Before the lift doors could close, the woman suddenly reached inside and attempted to pull off the mangalsutra and black-bead chain worn by the victim.
When the elderly woman shouted for help, the attacker managed to break away a portion of the chain, weighing about half a tola, and escaped.
Based on a complaint, the Sanathnagar police took up investigation and with the help of CCTV footage collected from the apartment premises and nearby areas, identified and nabbed the suspect.
