Hyderabad: Does going in a loop bore you out? Does doing a similar kind of workout day in and day out not enthuse you anymore?
Then take inspiration from three women cyclists from Hyderabad who have done the same activity for 30 days and achieved a name for themselves.
Priyanka Jain, Raji Krishna R Nair and Nirmita Ghia have been avid cyclists for the last three years and are a part of the Hyderabad Cyclists Group. From June 20 till July 21, the three women went around the Necklace Road loop in Hyderabad for 8 to 10 hours daily and covered 8,812 km (distance between Hyderabad and Cape Town) in a month.
It was an event last year where a few women had cycled long distances that motivated them to do something differently. “Although we have been cycling for almost three years, we wanted to challenge ourselves this time around. So we decided that rather than going far away, why not cover thousands of kilometres by cycling closer home. All three of us have been cycling on the Necklace Road stretch as it was closer home, so we decide to cycle in the same loop but in a different manner,” says Priyanka.
The three women who are homemakers and above the age of 35, cycled every day at a stretch with a target to cover a minimum of 80-plus km. While some days they used to start in the morning and cycle till late evening, a few days they used to start in the afternoon and cycled till midnight.
“After two or three days of this routine, the police started suspecting and asked us why we are cycling in a loop. However, when we explained to them that this is for a competition, they also supported us by taking care of our safety and regulating traffic as and when required,” she says.
The biggest support for these three women who have two children each was from the family. “We have cycled in all kinds of weather conditions be it sunny, rainy, or windy,” says Priyanka.
