Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park has decided to drop ‘Komaram Bheem’ as the name of the recently born Gaur at the zoo, keeping in view the sentiments of the family and followers of the tribal hero.
In a press release, the zoo authorities had said the Gaur calf was born on June 2, which coincided with Telangana Formation Day, and was named Komaram Bheem, as a mark of respect to the legendary hero of the tribals who sacrificed his life fighting for the rights of the marginalised poor.
The zoo curator in the press note cited reports in certain sections of press that the naming of the calf has offended the family members and followers of the legendary hero, and added, “It is clarified that the naming was meant as a mark of respect, and no disrespect was intended. However, keeping the sentiments of the family and followers of the legend, the name Komaram Bheem is dropped.”
