Hyderabad Zoo gears up to welcome wolf pups
For the first time, a wolf under the zoo's care is expected to give birth, with authorities anticipating the arrival of three to four whelps within the next one to two weeks. The zoo currently houses three grey wolves—two males and one female. "We are thrilled to welcome wolf pups. This is the first time it will happen under the zoo's supervision," said a senior official.
Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park here is gearing up to welcome new members, wolf pups, into the zoo family.
For the first time, a wolf in the zoo’s care is set to conceive, and authorities are expecting the birth of three to four whelps in the next one or two weeks.
The zoo is home to three grey wolves – two male and one female. “We are really excited to welcome wolf pups. For the first time it will happen in the zoo’s care,” said a senior official.
Following the birth of pups, they will be put under quarantine and they are expected to be released for the public view after a one-year period. “The gestation period of wolves is 60-75 days. We are anticipating the birth of wolf pups in the next 10-15 days. We are taking adequate medical care of the animal,” another official said.
Spread across sprawling 380 acres of land in Bahadurpura, the zoo is home to 194 different species, comprising 49 mammals, 106 birds, 37 reptiles and two amphibians. Currently, the zoo has a collection of 2,229 different animals with 519 mammals, 1,372 birds, 330 reptiles and eight amphibians.
