Hyderabad: When we think of women motorists in Telangana, it is sure that Jai Bharathi might have crossed your mind. The Hyderabadi Bikerni, who has set the target of empowering women by training them to ride two wheelers, has now laid the foundation stone of India’s first ever ‘Women Motor Training Centre’ in Hyderabad.

Launched by Satyavathi Rathod, Minister for Women and Child Welfare and Divya Devarajan, Principal Secretary, Dept. of Women and Child Development, it is a first-of-its-kind initiative in India to train women with motor training skills.

“There are several driving jobs for women, but there is a lack of proper motor training for women and over the years the driving industry has become male dominant. Now, we want to change that and teach two, three and four wheeler driving (after passing two-wheeler driving) exclusively for women so they can unlock new opportunities for themselves,” says Jai Bharathi, founder, MOWO Social Initiatives Foundation.

“When we talk about skill development for women, it has always been about tailoring, and other basic jobs. But now we want to introduce driving also as one of the skill development activities for women along with the Telangana government,” she adds.

The training centre’s drawing plan in the premises of Mahila Pranganam in Kukatpally, run by the Government of Telangana, was unveiled at the launch event. The centre will start functioning from January 2022.

Jai Bharathi’s expedition

The MoWo founder, in order to promote the Women Motor Training Centre and also as part of her annual rendition, is also set to go on an expedition called ‘Moving Boundaries Tour’ covering over 11,111 km across 20-plus cities in India.

“I will be travelling alone for the expedition. But I will have a crew team of photographers, event managers – accompanying me in a car. They will take care of the small events and workshops planned at different stops across India to spread awareness about ‘gender inclusive mobility’ and inspire other States to start a women motor training centre like Telangana,” she shares.

The 40 days expedition is supported by the POWERED programme, which is a joint partnership between Shell Foundation, a UK-based Charity and the British High Commission.
