Hyderabad: Cardiologists at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Thursday announced that they successfully performed a Pulmonary Artery Denervation (PADN) procedure, a rare and advanced treatment, on a 30-year-old pathologist from Chennai. The patient was suffering from Eisenmenger’s Syndrome–PDA, a severe heart-lung condition, and also had severe sub-systemic pulmonary hypertension affecting arteries in the lungs and heart.
Following the treatment, doctors observed a reduction in the patient’s pulmonary artery pressure and indicated that further improvement is expected during follow-up. The procedure serves as a bridge to transplant before a heart transplant, offering new hope to patients with severe pulmonary hypertension.
Pulmonary Artery Denervation (PADN) is a novel catheter-based medical technique originally developed at the Mayo Clinic in the United States. Its aim is to improve haemodynamics by reducing pulmonary vascular resistance, making it beneficial for patients with severe pulmonary hypertension who do not respond to conventional drug therapy.
On the occasion, NIMS Director Nagari Bheerappa said this was the first successful PADN surgery in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and is recognised as the sixth successful case in India. The catheter-based procedure was successfully performed under the leadership of the Head of the Cardiology Department, Professor Dr N Rama Kumari.
