Hyderabad: Think of Prasads Multiplex, and it naturally is followed by the word IMAX.  But did we realise that the theatre no longer screens in an IMAX format?

Yes, Hyderabad’s first ever IMAX large screen is no longer screening films in the format. Well, yet again, it is the digitalisation at fault.

Previously films were released with an IMAX print (reel) which was projected at Prasads through their IMAX analog projector. But as digitalisation entered into the making of films, the process including the releasing formats turned towards the digital spectrums. Now, films are no longer released in reels considering the cost for processing and logistics of reels and instead are released via digital mediums.

However, filmmakers have also found a better way out to keep the experience of IMAX alive even through digital distribution. But although the films are shot in digital IMAX format, the digital projector for the same, which can project on huge screens, is not currently present at Prasads and thus the multiplex no longer offers IMAX screenings.

IMAX fans now hope that the multiplex soon becomes equipped with the digital IMAX equipments’ and bring the real-life like film screening experience back to the movie lovers in the city.

Having introduced the mall culture – where with watching films one could enjoy playing games, have some snacks at the eateries and also shop at the same time – to the city dwellers, the first ever mall in Hyderabad, now falls prey to tight competition with the lately emerging multiplexes.

However, with the latest renovation of the multiplex, the falling charm has been brought back to life with large crowds being gathered at the theatre to witness some action in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and watch Allu Arjun in a raw avatar for the very first time in ‘Pushpa: The Rise’.

But the charm that the IMAX screening had is still missed amid the large screenings by film goers in the city.
