Hyderabad’s Social Scene Turns Competitive With Trivia Nights

Hyderabad: On a Tuesday evening in Hyderabad, arguments broke out over Oscar winners, IPL statistics and famous movie dialogues. Phones are pushed aside, teams whisper strategies, and every correct answer is met with cheers and groans in equal measure.

The city’s newest nightlife competition isn’t unfolding on a dance floor but around quiz sheets and scoreboards in cafes and pubs. While Hyderabad has long had a strong quizzing culture rooted in a decades-old tradition, trivia nights are giving the format a more informal and accessible identity. Hosted after work hours in cafes and pubs, they offer a space where people can unwind, compete and socialise at the same time.

“People want something on weekdays after a work day,” said Lokesh Kaza, lawyer and founder of Quizitive, which hosts trivia nights across the city. “The idea is to make quizzing more accessible and less intimidating than formal competitions,” he added.

Unlike traditional quiz formats that often reward specialised knowledge, trivia nights lean into films, music, sport, memes, pop culture and general knowledge, making participation easier even for those without preparation.

Trivia nights are also attracting a wider audience than conventional quiz competitions. While young professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 make up the largest share of participants, the events remain open to all age groups. “In pubs it is usually an older crowd, but in cafes we have seen children as young as six coming with parents,” Kaza said.

A typical event draws between 30 and 50 people, with teams of four to six members either arriving together or forming groups on the spot. Many participants return regularly, while others discover the events through friends and colleagues.

Though designed as light-hearted entertainment, the competition often intensifies as rounds progress. “It starts with fun and later becomes intense. Sometimes we even have tie-breakers to decide winners,” Kaza said.

Held once or twice a month at individual venues, the events charge entry fees ranging from Rs.200 to Rs.500, often including refreshments, while winners receive vouchers or discounts from the host venue.

With more organisers entering the space and repeat events drawing steady participation, Kaza believes trivia nights are still in their early growth phase in the city. “It’s a buzzing space and picking up interest. It’s definitely growing in Hyderabad,” he said.
