Hyderabad: The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU) has urged the State government to address critical gaps in the Social Security Scheme meant for transport and non-transport auto, cab drivers, home guards and working journalists.
This scheme, which was introduced in 2015, provided Rs 5 lakh accident insurance coverage to the beneficiaries. However, the scheme expired in October 2024, leaving as many as 13, 11,072 registered drivers without coverage.
TGPWU also highlighted that 454 claims amounting to Rs 22.7 crore from the period 2019–2024 remained unresolved due to poor coordination between the Labour and Transport Departments and the insurance company.
Some of the demands by the union include increasing insurance coverage to Rs 10 lakh with additional benefits for accidental disability and hospitalisation, prevent coverage gaps during policy renewals and decentralising the scheme’s implementation for better efficiency.
