Hyderabad: Previous enmity followed by property and family disputes were the main reasons behind the 95 murders that took place in 2021. Family disputes, friends, family members and distressed relations also contributed to the murder cases while sudden provocation and high emotion also emerged as driving factors.

This was found during an analysis conducted by the Telangana Police to know the reasons behind murder cases, Director-General of Police M Mahendar Reddy said. Fifty-five per cent of the accused were known to the victims in 85 murder for gain cases that took place in 2021. The financial resources of the victims have enticed the accused to commit murder for gain.

Greed, easy earnings and access to victims’ financial information were the main causes that contributed to these crimes. In the remaining 45 per cent of the cases, the accused were unknown. With respect to 2,383 rape cases registered in 2021, the police analysis found that the offenders were mostly known to the victims. It was also found that rapes were committed by unknown persons only in 26 cases while in 2,356 cases, close family members, friends, colleagues and acquaintances were involved.

Referring to 1,218 kidnap cases, the police found that only nine cases were committed for ransom. Reddy said a comprehensive plan of action has been prepared apart from increasing the number of check posts at the State borders to crack the whip on drug peddlers. He explained in detail about citizen financial cyber fraud reporting and management system, women safety wing, recruitment, awards and recognitions, smart policing initiatives, she cyber labs, drug offenders profiling, analysis and monitoring system. On the emergency response management system – dial 100/112, the department received and attended 11,24,990 calls in 2021, he added.
