Hyderabad: Director of Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, Bengaluru, Dr RK Mishra on Friday said there is a need for the country to prepare for future pandemics with smart investment.

Delivering a Hindi lecture at CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) on the topic ‘Lessons learnt from the pandemic and the way forward’, Dr Mishra, who earlier was Director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), said the present pandemic was handled well with vaccines and other technological interventions.

Massive surveillance aided in understanding the Covid-19 virus better eventually helped arresting the disease. Sewerage surveillance helped in identifying the infection in various places, indicating the pace of spread of the virus. The surveillance reports helped governments and policy makers to take proper informed decisions, Dr Mishra said.

“We must learn to be good citizens. The virus does not spread; we are responsible for its spread. So let us remain cautious. There is a need to be cautious towards pets and wildlife, as viruses can spread from them to humans,” Dr Mishra said.

Director of IICT, Dr Virendra Tiwari, senior officials and researchers from IICT and CCMB were present at the special Hindi talk on coronavirus.
