Hyderabad: Expanding concern with a developing world news story is a report of the first human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) case in India in Bengaluru, a respiratory virus that has been causing alarms around the world. A baby admitted to a hospital in the city was a positive case of this virus. The Karnataka government, however, stated it is not yet aware of the specific strain concerned and the impact such a development should have.

HMPV, an airborne virus with respiratory manifestions, has been spreading with increased surveillance around the world. It has symptoms similar to COVID-19: fever, cough, nasal congestion, and so on. This is usually very mild. Unfortunately, for infants and the elderly, especially those with compromised immune systems, it stands out as a big threat.

They say prevention is key, as HMPV currently has no vaccine or antiviral treatment. Authority agencies in Bengaluru are now making inquiries into the source of infection and to analyze possible risks of local transmission.

As the first reported case in India finds rising HMPV cases globally, there are already outbreaks confirmed in China and Malaysia. Health officials are urging strict respiratory hygiene and awareness.

While India faces with this emerging threat, many wondered-would HMPV make for the next big health challenge typically?
