Indian student shot on University of Toronto campus in Canada

An Indian research scholar was shot dead on the campus of University of Toronto Scarborough campus, according to reports reaching here.

Hyderabad: An Indian student was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, according to information reaching here on Friday.

The Indian consulate in Canada said a doctoral student Shivank Avasthi was killed in a fatal shooting incident near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus.


The consulate officials were in tocuh with the bereaved family members during this difficult time. The consulate is extending all necessary assistance in coordination with the local authorities, the consulate posted on social media platform X.

Shivank Avasthi, from Toronto, was a doctoral student at the University of Toronto Scarborough and a member of the campus cheerleading team.

Local media reports said police responded to reports of serious injuries around 3:34 p.m. near Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road, where Avasthi was found with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene. This marked Toronto’s 41st homicide of 2025, with suspects fleeing before officers arrived.
