Hyderabad: The Irrigation Department initiated partial operations of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) on Wednesday, responding to demands from Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders, including former irrigation minister T. Harish Rao, to resume pumping to address farmers’ water shortages.
Under Link-2 of the Kaleshwaram project, officials began lifting water from the Sripada Yellampalli reservoir, activating three pumping units at the Nandi Medaram pump house to lift 9,450 cusecs of water through twin tunnels to the Gayatri pump house. From there, three additional motors are pumping water which would ultimately channelise to Mid Manair reservoir, a key component of the KLIP network.
This operation will benefit a few of the reservoirs integrated with the KLIP including Ranganayaka Sagar, Mallanna Sagar and Kondapochamma Sagar. However, the Kannepalli pump house, designed to lift two TMC of water a day from the Medigadda barrage to the Annaram barrage and further to Sundilla, remains non-operational.
The partial operations will irrigate only 10 percent of the 18.25 lakh acres ayacut across 13 districts under Kaleshwaram.
