Jntu students staging rasta roko at Agraharam, Vemulawada rural mandal on monday.
RAJANNA-SIRCILLA: Students of JNTU staged a rasta roko at Agraharam in Vemulawada rural mandal on Monday, demanding that the government provide basic facilities in the college.
Vehicular traffic on the Vemulawada-Sircilla main road was brought to a standstill as students continued their protest for about two hours. Police rushed to the spot, dispersed the protesters and shifted a few students to the police station.
The students said they had submitted a representation to the Collector three days ago, but no action had been taken. They alleged that the Congress government had failed to provide facilities in the college.
Later, BRS Vemulawada constituency in-charge Chalmeda Lakshmi Narsimha Rao visited the police station and extended support to the students. He criticised the police for disrupting the protest and shifting the students.
He pointed out that during the BRS regime, Sircilla MLA and former Minister KT Rama Rao had issued a GO allocating Rs 450 crore to JNTU and identified 20 acres in Mandapalli for the construction of the college building. However, he said the Congress government failed to provide classrooms, hostels and teaching faculty.
As their issues remained unresolved despite repeated representations to the vice-principal, Collector and higher officials, students resorted to rasta roko. The BRS leader demanded that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy immediately release funds and lay the foundation for the construction of the building.
