Kacheguda railway station redevelopment plan worth Rs 474 crore proposes new terminal, air concourse

Kacheguda Railway Station is set for a proposed Rs 474.29-crore redevelopment, with a new terminal on the eastern side and a 72-metre-wide air concourse. The plan also proposes improved passenger circulation, a skywalk, parking facilities and modern amenities.

Hyderabad: The historic Kacheguda Railway Station is set for a major redevelopment, with the South Central Railway (SCR) authorities preparing a draft concept plan estimated at Rs 474.29 crore to upgrade passenger facilities while preserving the station’s heritage character.

Under the proposal, the historic heritage building on the western side is expected to be retained in its existing form, while a new terminal building is proposed on the eastern side, towards Amberpet.

According to SCR authorities, the plan is currently at the draft stage and may undergo changes. Further, the Railway Ministry’s Gati Shakti team is expected to review the proposal, including its design and financial estimates, before the redevelopment plan is finalised.

A senior railway official said the few building designs were under consideration, but nothing had been finalized as yet.

As per information available, a key feature of the proposal is a 72-metre-wide and 115-metre-long air concourse above the platforms. Also, it is planned to house food courts, executive lounges, retail outlets, exhibition spaces and children play areas.
Separate circulation routes for arriving and departing passengers, along with additional foot-over bridges, have also been proposed to improve passenger movement.

The plan further includes a skywalk connecting the railway station, with the adjoining TGSRTC bus station and multilevel car parking facilities are proposed on both the eastern and western sides of the railway station.

According to estimates, the station currently handles on an average of around 46,689 passengers each day and the footfall is projected to rise to 1.05 lakh passengers a day by the year 2063.

Railway officials said the redevelopment is aimed at accommodating future passenger growth and providing modern amenities without compromising the historic character of one of city’s prominent railway landmarks.
