Kamareddy: Normal life came to a standstill in the district as heavy rains continued to lash since Wednesday morning, leading to flooding of streams, damage to railway tracks and disruption of road traffic.
The Boggugudise stream in Nizamsagar mandal was overflowing, when a water tanker got stuck in the floodwaters. About six daily wage workers engaged in bridge works near the stream climbed onto the tanker for safety and cried for help as the inflows suddenly rose, according to reports.
Railway tracks were damaged at Rameshwarpally on the Nizamabad–Hyderabad route due to excessive flooding, prompting the suspension of train services in the region as a precautionary measure.
Traffic movement in the town was also disrupted as several low-lying areas were inundated. Residents waded through waist-deep water to reach safer places. Police personnel rescued several people from the Housing Board Colony and shifted them to relief shelters.
Tension prevailed in colonies abutting Pedda Cheruvu as the waterbody received heavy inflows, raising fears of inundation. Residents of GR Colony also sought urgent help from authorities.
A few cars parked on roadsides were swept away in the floodwaters. With water flowing over National Highway 44 at Jangampally, officials suspended vehicular movement on the Kamareddy–Hyderabad route.
