Kargil war veteran Group Captain GJ Rao calls for national suicide prevention policy in meeting with Telangana Governor
In light of rising suicide rates, Kargil War veteran and anti-suicide advocate Group Captain G.J. Rao met with Governor Jishnu Dev Varma in Hyderabad to present his sustainable prevention models and urge national adoption. Rao highlighted his award-winning film “September 10”, based on his book, and emphasised the revival of suicide helplines.

Hyderabad: Disturbed by the alarming rise in suicides, Kargil War veteran and anti-suicide crusader, Group Captain G.J. Rao called on Governor Jishnu Dev Varma at Raj Bhavan on Friday.
During the meeting, Group Captain Rao presented two of his books on Sustainable Suicide Prevention Models (2015) and urged the Governor to impress upon the Union Government to adopt his proposed cost-effective measures nationwide.
He also stressed the need to revive the suicide prevention helpline. The veteran informed the Governor that September 10, a film he produced based on his book, recently won three awards at the 17th International Film Festival of Hyderabad Charminar (IFFHC) 2025.
Dr. S. Ramu, journalism educator and mental health advocate, who has joined hands with Group Captain Rao’s mission for over a decade, told the Governor that the officer’s commitment stems from his personal and professional experiences.
The Kargil veteran requested the Governor to attend a mega programme being planned in Hyderabad to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Septermber 10.
