Karimnagar: The Lower Manair Dam (LMD), once notorious as a site for suicides, drownings, and illegal activities, has now turned into a safe zone with the presence of a dedicated lake police outpost.
For years, people battling personal problems chose LMD to end their lives by jumping into its waters. There were also frequent incidents of children drowning while swimming, along with cases of eve-teasing near Ujwala Park and Deer Park, located adjacent to the water body.
To curb such incidents, the Commissionerate Police established a lake police outpost in 2017. A Sub-Inspector along with six constables has been deployed. Equipped with a drone camera, binoculars, bicycles, walkie-talkies, and CCTV cameras at vantage points, the lake police continuously monitor the premises.
Round-the-clock patrolling in and around the dam area ensures strict vigilance. So far, 292 persons have been rescued by the police, including those attempting suicide or found in distress. Individuals engaging in suspicious movements are quickly approached and counselled.
The police have also tackled issues of open boozing, imposing fines on offenders identified through drone surveillance. Instances of people attending to nature’s call in the premises have reduced after consistent counselling.
Earlier, washermen and locals used the dam waters for washing clothes, even though the reservoir supplies drinking water to Karimnagar, Warangal, and Siddipet. This practice has now been stopped after awareness and counselling sessions.
By identifying eve-teasers and addressing misconduct in front of their families, the police have ensured corrective action. Their proactive measures have not only enhanced security but also made LMD a safer spot for visitors and devotees.
