Karimnagar: A salary scam worth Rs 1.40 crore has been unearthed in the Karimnagar police commissionerate.
Investigations revealed that the accused siphoned off salaries in the names of deceased police personnel by opening fraudulent bank accounts. Five individuals, including a serving head constable and a retired administrative officer, have been arrested.
Police identified head constable Neelam Rammohan, currently posted at Chigurumamidi police station, as the prime accused.
During his earlier posting in the pay section of the Karimnagar city police commissionerate’s CPO office, Rammohan allegedly accessed the employee IDs of deceased constables, Ch Ravinder, K Rangaswamy and K Ravi. Using these details, he created fake accounts and diverted salaries meant for the deceased officers.
Later, Rammohan opened fraudulent bank accounts in the names of private individuals, Lavudia Ravi, Chokka Gangraju and Shankar Namathabab, at HDFC Bank’s Bhagatnagar and Bommakal branches.
He linked his personal email ID and mobile number to these accounts and diverted the salaries of deceased constables into them between June 2022 and March 2026. The funds were withdrawn through ATMs and also transferred to his own account via IMPS.
Surprisingly, Rammohan secured loans against the fake accounts and paid the EMIs using the siphoned funds. He was assisted by retired administrative officer YV Muni Ramaiah, along with three private associates, Ravi, a watchman; Gangaraju, a trolley driver; and Shankar, a mutton shopkeeper.
Commissioner of Police Gaush Alam, who recently detected suspicious salary transactions, ordered an inquiry led by Taskforce ACP Vasala Sathish. Once irregularities were confirmed, a case was registered at Karimnagar One Town police station and the accused were taken into custody.
