Karimnagar: Subodh Singh, the mastermind behind the sensational PMJ jewellery dacoity, monitored the heist from a Bihar jail. Subodh Singh, also known as “the Golden Thief’, targets only jewellery shops and banks. So far, he has allegedly been responsible for looting about 400 kg of gold in different cases in different states.
Leading the interstate dacoit gang, Subodh plans big thefts by picking up old criminals, who do not know each other, to evade police investigation. Besides using modern technology, advanced reconnaissance methods are also employed.
Instead of directly getting involved in any operation, he reportedly monitors the gang members through a handler, who arranges everything including weapons, vehicles, SIM cards and other essentials to the gang members to execute the operation. Instead of contacting the members directly over mobile phones, the entire communication is conducted through encrypted mobile applications.
In the PMJ jewellery shop heist also, the assailants downloaded a geo-tagged mobile application to flee using rural routes after the theft. Moreover, one of the accused uploaded his photo with a necklace in his hand on the app indicating that the theft was done.
It was established in the police investigation that a number of dacoity gangs operating in the country pay salaries to their members regularly, besides 50 percent incentives if they manage to loot a huge quantity of jewellery or cash.
In each dacoity, three teams responsible for extraction, making arrangements and for disposal of stolen gold would be involved. It was the responsibility of the extraction team to commit theft. Another team arranges weapons and vehicles for transportation. Finally, the disposal team will sell the looted gold. There would only be one handler to coordinate with three teams.
Moreover, except for threatening the people with pistols, they would not create terror by opening fire since police would immediately rush to the spot and intensify search operations if anybody was dead.
In the PMJ jewellery shop, they opened fire only because the staff tried to overpower them, Commissioner of Police, Gaush Alam informed while producing the PMJ thieves before the media here on Thursday. After being involved in the crime, they would not go to their homes.
