Hyderabad: BRS MLC K Kavitha said the Congress government was destroying backward classes residential schools in the State.

Raising the issue of BC gurukuls during the Question Hour in the Legislative Council on Monday, Kavitha said ever since the Congress had come to power in the State, it had started neglecting the government residential schools. The cases of food poisoning in government residential schools had gone up in the State in the last one year and the quality of education too had come down drastically, she pointed out.

Stating that the previous BRS government was committed towards the welfare of BCs, she said there were only 19 BC residential degree colleges at the time of formation of Telangana, which was increased to 275 during the BRS regime.

The BRS government even set up a separate Agriculture College for BCs, she reminded, adding that the previous government released Rs. 14,000 crore for fee reimbursement of BC students, which benefited over 15 lakh of them.

“BRS government on an average set up 25 BC gurukuls per year in ten years,”she said.

Criticising the government for not releasing Mahatma Jyothiba Phule Overseas Vidya Nidhi for BC, she demanded the government to immediately release the fund.

Earlier, BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar clarified that there was no proposal to establish a new BC Gurukuls on the lines of Navodaya Vidyalayas in every mandal and a new degree college in every district.
